Tryon moved into the house in 1770 and stayed there for only a couple of years. For a while it was used for school. When the governor's residence was completed in 1770 in the newly designated capital New Bern, it rivaled any goverment building in the British Empire. The governor and his family lived on the second floor. The north Caroina citizens became determined to rebuild the palace, using Hawks original plan. After World war 2,they raised enough money to pay for the reconstruction. The palace opened in 1959, and has been one of the leading tourist destinations in the state since then.
